River House

Norval, Ontario

Set on the banks of the Credit River overlooking a Set on the banks of the Credit River overlooking a flood plain and sheltered by a forested escarpment on the north, this house experiences an unusual micro climate, described as tropical in the summer and frigid in the winter. Unpeeled logs columns harvested directly from the site support Douglas Fir beams at the entrance porch and in the dining room. The remaining lumber was formed into stair treads. Three-inch-wide hemlock roof joists support an exposed and unfinished plywood deck. Polished concrete floors are heated by a hot water boiler, with secondary heat provided by a small but efficient wood stove.
