Biodiversity Research

Amazon Jungle, Peru

2011

Beyond the origins of the Amazon River lies the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, the second oldest nature reserve in the World. In March 2011, Centennial College sent Francis and three other faculty members together with eight students to the Pacaya reserve on a Global Citizenship Equity Learning Experience (GCELE). Our task, together with natural science students and faculty from a local university (who spoke little English), was to complete a bio-diversity assessment of the jungle and river to monitor the health of indicator species. Near the end of the trip, the group toured two remote indigenous villages subject to substantial seasonal flooding to observe and learn how they cope with their environment. We noted earlier NGO interventions that had been poorly designed and implemented, and in a few cases, that were now a hazard.
