Atikameksheng Anishawbek First Nation - Housing

Naughton, Ontario

Atikameksheng Anishnawbek asked Lapointe Architects to design sustainable houses for their public housing program. The site consists of a forested rocky outcrop overlooking the community below. The design included seven new houses ranging from 1 and 2-storey detached, semi-detached, and four-unit apartment buildings. The designs included features such as air-lock vestibules, protected front entry porches supported by log columns, exterior access to utility rooms, sloping ceilings through the common spaces to allow for natural ventilation, and south facing living spaces with large windows. Durable interior and exterior materials such as galvalume roofing, pre-finished wood siding, and Durisol foundations are complemented by the use of local wood elements to help reinforce the traditional culture.
