Blythdale House,
Toronto, Ontario
Lapointe Architects collaborated with celebrated Design Architect Claudio Gantous of Mexico to create a contemporary family home in a suburban setting that is energy efficient and suited to local codes and climate.
An essay in sustainability, the house seamlessly integrates sustainable features that suggest both external and internal permanence and beauty. A pallet of natural materials including rough and honed stone, concrete, cedar, copper and glass, and an interior garden landscaped with indigenous grasses, conceal the latest energy conservation technologies. These include a ground source heat pump which provides heat to radiant in-floor heating or rejects heat to the warm the outdoor pool, and roof-mounted photovoltaic solar collectors that produce excess electricity during the day. The family’s overall energy consumption will be reduced enough to roll back the meter.
